There might be something equally iconic and common stance to Floridians as the mouse ears - the Publix scale, or people weigher as they call it. These lollipop-looking scales have been around since the late 1930s when the first Publix stores opened. George Jenkins, the founder of Publix, thought having free scales in the store would be a great addition for customers. Apparently most scales during that time required a fee and they weren’t common household items just yet.
